Athletics
Athletics Overview
Highlanders athletics strives to offer a variety of competitive sports and extracurricular activities and provide opportunities for students to learn, grow, and participate in the sport they enjoy to promote wellness and develop character.
Highlanders Athletics, under the NLESD athletics policies, works with School Sports NL, provincial sport governing bodies, and other schools and programs to provide a variety of meaningful sports competitions for our sports teams to train for and participate in.
In sports, there are more than SSNL events (or 1 event), and where there is a highly attended and competitive tryout, we strive to provide additional teams to represent HHM.
Our teams are tiered: Varsity (A), Senior High B, Senior High C, Senior High D
Team rosters are never final. Rosters are subject to change throughout the year due to varying circumstances as deemed necessary by the athletics department and in conjunction with the school administration following school and NLESD policy.
Highlanders Athletics Affiliates
The sports that are offered at Holy Heart of Mary High School are determined by accessibility to meaningful competition through School Sport NL and NL Provincial Sport Governing bodies and other school based invitational tournaments.
Our teams can fall under one, two or three of the following competition events/organizations.
School Sports NL
The SSNL varsity program provides School Based Provincial Competition in A, AA, AAA, and AAAA schools across the province. Gonzaga High School is a 4A SSNL School.
SSNL competitions consist of regional qualifiers and provincial competition. Schools are represented by ONE team that completes in qualifiers to earn their entrance to Provincial competitions. SSNL Varsity sport calendar and information can be found on their website.
GOV NL and SportNL
Sport NL under the Government of Newfoundland Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, has a wide variety of resources and access to sport in our province.
